Elevate Fitness Pocatello hosted this year’s Idaho State Handball Championship on April 12th and 13th, 2024. This is the first time the championship has come back to Pocatello since before the pandemic.
Elevate Fitness Pocatello is located in the old Westwood Mall on Garrett Way and will be hosting both Handball and Racquetball tournaments on a regular basis. These events bring in the best players from multiple states.
“The greatest game once again reunites old and new friends” Says Rick Lopez.
For those of you wondering what Handball is, it is a game played in racquetball courts and the object of the game is to hit the ball so that your opponent cannot return the ball. In a similar fashion, the ball must strike the wall before the floor and can only bounce one time before needing returned.
Not only is the game challenging, but it can also be very physical and a lot of fun. Handballers come to the gym to play on Monday and Wednesday evenings and are looking to recruit more local players.
The State Championship featured both singles and doubles brackets in five skill levels. Utah’s, Ryan Campbell won against Pocatello’s Carson Taysom in Open singles during a third game tiebreaker. For Open Doubles, Boise’s Gilbert and Frances beat out Carson and Ryan. According to Carson Taysom “The competition was fierce; all matches were tough and the majority of matches went to the final points of a tie breaker with a three-point difference in most matches”.

Multiple local businesses rallied together to sponsor this year’s event and we are looking for a lot more so that we can host a pro stop with ESPN coverage.
We want to thank all of our local sponsors during this event: Elevate Fitness, Elevate Physical Therapy, TEC Distributing, Firehouse Subs, Goody's, Buz's Tire, Henry's Hair Salon, Taysom Construction, and Alston Ink.
“We are excited to see these sports thrive again after the pandemic and look forward to making Elevate Fitness the gym of choice for these multistate athletes to compete.” says gym owner, Trina Hall.
